Microsoft Windows Essential Business Server 2008 will be discontinued
Microsoft announced on March 5 that Windows Essential Business Server 2008 will be discontinued on June 30,2010. Microsoft Windows Essential Business Server 2008 was targeted at midsized businesses.

Due to the number of options available from Microsoft for midsized businesses there has been sluggish demand for EBS2008.

You are not left with two options:
  1. SBS2008 which will work for organizations with less than 75 users.
  2. Purchase full license product of Windows Server 2008.

Microsoft Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 to be released on May 12, 2010
Microsoft announced on March 4, 2010 that they will be releasing the entire Microsoft Office 2010 Suite to the general public on May 12, 2010. This includes:
  • Word 2010
  • Excel 2010
  • PowerPoint 2010
  • Access 2010
  • Visio 2010
  • Project 2010
  • SharePoint 2010

Presumably this includes SharePoint Foundation Services and SharePoint Server 2010 but the announcement was unclear on this point.

Find out more by attending the Worldwide Launch Event (http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/businessproductivity/proof/pages/2010-launch-events.aspx).

Anyone that purchases Office 2007 between now and September is eligible for a free upgrade to Office 2010 under the Office 2010 Technology Guarantee Program.

The Release to Manufacturing (RTM) and publishing for MSDN subscribers should happen in April.

New Charts in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Online Edition
With the release of Rollup 6 of Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Online Edition, Microsoft has introduced several new features. One great new feature is Charts which allows you to create graphical representations of a View for any Entity (i.e. Account, Contact, Lead, etc.).

You can add up to 5 charts to the top of any view in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Online Edition.
Mobile Express for Microsoft Dynamics CRM is released

Get the latest Web Component for mobile devices for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0. this is the long awaited update to Mobile Express since previously the version only supported Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 but could be configured to work with 4.0. Mobile Express for Microsoft Dynamics CRM is available for the on Premise version of Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0. This update include the Rollup 5 as a part of the installation package as it is required to install this on your Dynamics CRM Server.

What are my mobile options with Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0?
There are two options to consider for using Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0:
  1. Use CRM Mobile Express.
  2. Use CWR Mobile CRM 4.0.

CRM Mobile Express is a free download from Codeplex (http://www.codeplex.com/crmmobileexpress). This was designed around Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 but there is no functional reason that it won't work. This version will allow you to access Microsoft Dynamics CRM from any mobile browser (iPhone, Blackberry, etc.) but this is will work with an active Internet Connection. While free a good understanding of Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) and ASP.NET is a really good idea.

CWR Mobile CRM 4.0 (http://www.cwrmobility.com/) is a very complete solution allowing for your Windows Mobile device to store some records offline. The upside, no Internet Connection required. The downside, requires a Windows Mobile Phone. Each phone has to be licensed to use this product but this is very good solution for online/offline access to your CRM data.

Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 and SQL Server 2008
A question that I have answered several times now is -- Does Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 support Microsoft SQL Server 2008? The short answer, yes. If it is a new install of Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 then all you have to do is make sure to download the updates during the installation process.

Now if you have already installed Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 then you will need to make sure all updates are applied to the existing implementation first. Then you can move different pieces to SQL Server 2008 one-by-one. That's it.

Let me know if you have questions on this topic.
Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Accelerators
Microsoft offers several Accelerators at no additional charge to Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0. Check them out at http://codeplex.com/crmaccelerators. I will be covering these in more detail over the next few months.
Apparently Microsoft isn't Equipt'ed
As quickly as Microsoft Released Equipt they have already pulled the plug. Oh well, it was a good idea while it lasted. Microsoft's reason for the pull is that they are revaluating packaging options.

The interesting part of this was the annoucnement about Microsoft Windows Live OneCare and how it will no longer be sold. Microsoft will be offering several new options in the new year. So stay stuned.

Have you wondered what the Seinfeld & Gates Commercials are all about?

Well, I have and Microsoft finally made it a little clearer on September 18th. Check out the new "I'm a PC" campaign here. Microsoft wants to start a new conversation with the public to address their image especially around the Microsoft Windows brand. Many Microsoft detractors have been pretty successfully of late to tarnish the overall image of Windows Vista. Just check out the Apple Ads to see what I mean (don't get me wrong, these are really funny ads). This is also what has led to the Mojave Experiment where Microsoft went around telling people that they wanted to show them the next version of Microsoft Windows (which, by the way, you will need to download Silverlight to view the site).

In typical Microsoft style they are going to be bombarding us with a couple of different messages like "Windows without Walls" and the "I'm a PC" messaging. So sit back and watch. I think there is going to be a lot of back-and-forth on what Microsoft is doing be opponents and proponents.
