The Mono Project has reached version 2.0

MonoOn October 6th, the Mono Project finally released version 2.0. So what is Mono and why should you care? Well, Mono allows for Microsoft .NET Framework based applications to be run on non-Windows based Operating Systems like Mac, Linux, BSD and many others (here is a list of support OSes). The reason why you should care is that this can dramatically reduce your costs for things like webhosting. So no longer can Microsoft bashers say that Microsoft .NET will only run on Windows.

Now, Mono is designed to work against the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 and is not 100% compatible. While Microsoft has currently released three updates to the .NET Framework since then (3.0, 3.5, and 3.5 SP1). Another thing about Mono is the it is sponsored by Novell and is an open source project.

I am definitely looking forward to working with Mono.

Are you Microsoft Equipt?

Microsoft Equipt Microsoft Equipt is a pretty interesting idea that gives you Antivirus and the Productivity Application all together in one package for up to three computers. So who is this best for? This is really designed for use at home or students. This is not the best option for most small business users. But for home use this is really a great option since it is retailing for $69.99 at Circuit City. The trick here is that you will need to renew each year which will spread your real cost over several years but does give you all the updates as they are released.

Google Chrome - Who should download?

Well the short answer -- leave it to the geeks right now. Chrome is pretty impressive for what it is. Technically it is put together really well. So...

the Pros...

  1. The fastest browser I have used. Google contributes a lot of the speed of Chrome to V8 -- the new open sourced JavaScript Engine.
  2. Low memory foot print. If you have an older computer this could be a good option.
  3. Simple to use. Not overburdened with lots of options and other features yet (I am sure that will come)

the Cons...

  1. Bad EULA (End User License Agreement). According to many sites you are giving Google rights to any you do in their browser. If you thought Microsoft was bad about privacy read the Google Chrome EULA.
  2. Pretty buggy. This will be fixed but common sites like Facebook and many other have issues.
  3. No extensions/add-ins. Although I am sure this is coming soon.
