How do I disable exporting records from Microsoft Dynamics CRM?

Under Business Management Tab in any Security Role from the Administration Area in the Settings Section there is an option that says “Export to Excel”, make sure none selected (a white circle with a red border, see legend).

What does this do? This will remove the Excel icon from all of the toolbars on every view in Microsoft Dynamics CRM.

Why would I need to audit? You may want to make it more difficult for certain people to obtain a copy of the proprietary information within Microsoft Dynamics CRM. While this only makes it more difficult it will not prevent savvy users from working around this.

Can I audit when the export feature is used and by whom? Short answer, yes. This involves enabling logging in Internet Information Services (IIS). Sonoma Partners has a great article about how to technically do this. Auditing would only work on the on Premise version of Microsoft Dynamics CRM.

The Mono Project has reached version 2.0

MonoOn October 6th, the Mono Project finally released version 2.0. So what is Mono and why should you care? Well, Mono allows for Microsoft .NET Framework based applications to be run on non-Windows based Operating Systems like Mac, Linux, BSD and many others (here is a list of support OSes). The reason why you should care is that this can dramatically reduce your costs for things like webhosting. So no longer can Microsoft bashers say that Microsoft .NET will only run on Windows.

Now, Mono is designed to work against the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 and is not 100% compatible. While Microsoft has currently released three updates to the .NET Framework since then (3.0, 3.5, and 3.5 SP1). Another thing about Mono is the it is sponsored by Novell and is an open source project.

I am definitely looking forward to working with Mono.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Released

Microsoft just made the RTM (Released to Manufacturing) builds of SQL Server 2008 to the MSDN and TechNet download sites. So those with TechNet and MSDN subscriptions right now can do download it. Why might you want to use SQL Server 2008? Well, there are many reasons. Some highlights that most interest me are…

  1. Resource Governor. The ability to more accurately determine what and how much resources can be used by specific databases and SQL Server 2008 in general.
  2. More Data Types. Previous versions SQL Server had methods to support other data types like files. Now, in SQL Server 2008 there is much improved support for files, location aware, and other data types.
  3. Better Data Mining. With Data Mining Add-ins for Office 2007 you can now more easily find the answers you are looking for out of your data.
