Microsoft Silverlight v3.0 is released

The latest version of Silverlight, Version 3.0, was release on July 9, 2009. There are many worthwhile improvements. Check out the link below to learn more about the new features.

Check out Photosynth

Logo_Photosynth.pngA while back Microsoft release Photosynth which is a very interesting application that enables you to stitch photos together to create a 3D image -- allowing you to zoom, pan and even change your perspective of any particular scene. So the more photos you have a scene the better the Photosynth. So you you have not heard of photosynth check it out, it is free!

Ever heard of Deep Zoom?

Deep Zoom was released by Microsoft a while ago. It is a feature that is being promoted with Silverlight 2.0 (which is now released, download Silverlight 2.0). Deep Zoom allows you to do, well, exactly that. Zoom in and see very detailed images. To view a Deep Zoom image you do need to have Silverlight already installed. Here is a great video that shows you what it does:

Another fun one is the Hard Rock Memorabilia site.

You can read more about Deep Zoom on the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) site below.

Microsoft Silverlight 2.0 Released

silverlight_logo.jpgOn Monday, Scott Guthrie announced the release of Microsoft Silverlight 2.0 (finally). This release dramatically changes the game becoming serious competition for Adobe Flash (and AIR). So check it out see what it can do and see if this is something you can take advantage of.

Microsoft has even stated that 1 in 4 Consumers has already installed Silverlight (WOW, I would like to see more proof about that). This was mainly fueled by Microsoft managing the NBCOlympics.com website. Ensuring that anyone looking for Olympics coverage needed to have Silverlight installed. This is one of the best distribution and deployment approaches I have seen Microsoft use in years (very clever).

Microsoft Silverlight 2.0 Released

Silverlight 2.0, Why?
Microsoft new "Flash Killer" Silverlight is poised to make a big impact on how you interact with Websites. Why?
  1. Cross Browser Support. Uncharacteristically, Microsoft is supporting the most popular browsers (i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari) not only on Windows but the Mac and, via Moonlight opensource, Linux.
  2. Dynamics Programming Languages. This makes Silverlight immediately available for tens of thousands of developers to write compelling applications, animations and other dynamics experiences on any web page. Developers familiar with Microsoft technologies and tools can immediately take advantage of Silverlight without spending days, weeks or months learning new tools. This also drives down costs for clients since there is a large pool of qualified professionals already available.
  3. Integrating Graphics, Animation and Code. A key issue has always been that Graphic Designers and Developers don't speak the same language. Now with Silverlight, Expression Blend and Visual Studio all can share the same files. The result, faster delivery of the end product and less time converting from one format to another.

There are many other reasons why for Silverlight (we will cover those in later postings) but for more details go to www.silverlight.net.
