3/7/2010Microsoft announced on March 5 that Windows Essential Business Server 2008 will be discontinued on June 30,2010. Microsoft Windows Essential Business Server 2008 was targeted at midsized businesses.
Due to the number of options available from Microsoft for midsized businesses there has been sluggish demand for EBS2008.
You are not left with two options:
- SBS2008 which will work for organizations with less than 75 users.
- Purchase full license product of Windows Server 2008.
8/21/2008 Today, it was announced that Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2008 was "Release to Manufacturing". What this means is the product is completed and they are just putting together the packaging. The product will be officially launched on November 12, 2008. Look out for the Launch event which should be around this date here and many other cities across the country. With this latest round of release Microsoft is now has two offerings: - Microsoft Windows Small Business Server for businesses with 5 to 75 employees and want only one server.
- Microsoft Windows Essential Server for business with 25 to 300 employees and need multiple servers dedicated to specific tasks
These two offerings are built around small and medium size business and their specific needs in four areas: - IT Foundation/IT Infrastructure
- Business Productivity
- Security
- Application Platform
Microsoft realizes that small and medium size business have a very difficult struggle to effectively support, maintain and administer their IT infrastructure. These two offerings are specifically tailored to take address their needs, create higher value and lower overall costs. One of the most compelling ways to accomplish this is through IT Handyman's Computer Complete Care Program which offers Unlimited Support to small and medium size businesses at a flat monthly fee. What is different? One significant difference between Small Business Server 2003 R2 and earlier is that SBS2008 is a "64-bit" only operating system. While Windows Server 2008 is available in a 32-bit version SBS2008 has to be 64-bit because of other technologies like Exchange Server 2007 which is only available in a 64-bit version. What this really means is that you will need to closely evaluate whether it makes sense to upgrade your current equipment or to purchase new equipment. In most cases you will need to consider a system with the following at a minimum:
- At least 2 Processor Cores supporting AMD x64, Intel EM64T or Itanium. 4 Processor Cores Recommended.
- At least 2 GB of Memory. 4GB of Memory Recommended. (We typically recommend at least 1 GB of Memory per processor or more)
- At Least 80GB of Storage Space. 3 or more Hard Drives in a RAID5 configuration Recommended.
